No one can deny how important tools are in our daily lives. They make our lives easier and more efficient. 

Just imagine how life would be if papers and pens were not invented. We would still be using a stylus and clay tablets for writing. 

When you decide on putting up an online business, the first thing that you should have is a professional website. A site where people can know more about your business and what you have to offer. 

Of course, when you create a website, you need a content management system like WordPress, a domain name, and other tools to build your site. 

But building an online business takes time and a lot of research. There should be a strategy and tools behind the scene of your website. 

Online tools or software are what’s behind the scene, working day and night, for your business. 

Investing in online tools has a lot of benefits.

Four Business Quadrants

We organized our business into four different categories based upon our four digital business quadrants:  sales funnel, content, product, and team.

Sales funnel

Sales funnel is a process that a lead goes through before they turn into a buyer or customer. 

In online marketing, it is important to have your sales funnel automated. And that is what the customers expect from you, too. 

Once your sales funnel is strategic, you will have a higher conversion rate and higher sales. But it is also important to study the behavior of your customers along the funnel process. 

Creating a sales funnel and analyzing the results are both complex processes especially if you’re not tech-savvy. You need the help of tools to be able to cope up with the demands of your audience in the easiest way. 

1. MailerLite

This is the most valuable free software on the list. 

MailerLite has you covered not only with email marketing automation. But also on your landing pages. 

It is a powerful tool to use when you generate leads online and drive traffic from your content or social media pages to your landing pages.

MaileLite’s free plan 

  • Allows you to have up to a thousand subscribers; and 
  • Allows you to have affiliate marketing. 

You do need to confirm your business and the type of marketing that you’re doing. This is to ensure that the people on their platform aren’t doing spam. 

Tip: Make sure that all the contacts you have on your email list have opted-in. Because as with all email service providers, you need to be very careful with how you do your affiliate marketing. 

2. Google marketing platform

This is about your data analytics, tracking, and conversion software. These are Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, and Google Optimize. I just squeeze these three tools here. 

Google Analytics This free tool allows you to see how your website performs overall. Here you can see where traffic comes from, their demographics, their preferences, and even which ads or blogs are driving the most traffic to your landing page or sales page. 

With the use of Google Analytics, you can make decisions on how to improve your marketing strategy based on the data that it provides to you. 

Google Tag Manager is a free tool that allows you to put all of your tracking codes in one easy to find place. 

If you do Facebook ads, Pinterest, LinkedIn, or even Snapchat, they will put tags and pixels on your website. 

To remember all the files and names of your links is cumbersome and confusing. So Tag Manager is your virtual file cabinet, where you put all the tags in there. You only have to put one piece of code on your website

Google Optimize – This tool allows you to conduct A/B split testing, which allows you to make the most out of your conversion rate. 

And of course, the Google optimized code goes inside of tag manager to keep things nice and clean

Even though MailerLite has a native split testing function, we like to use MailerLite landing pages and Google Optimize. 

You can use Google Optimize with any page builder software. And you can split test everything such as headlines, images, call to action buttons, and even bullet points. 

It is very useful if you use a page builder that doesn’t allow you to do split testing or charges you twice as much to do AB split tests. This is absolutely free. 

Google has a lot of free software in its Google Suite. But these are the marketing software that you should use in your sales funnel. 

Content

One of the biggest challenges in content marketing is answering the question – What would my next content be? 

It is difficult to determine what to discuss because you’ve run out of topics. If you can’t come up with a new content idea, then your channel or blog will just die away 

Brainstorming an idea, planning how to do it, and executing it can be physically and mentally draining. You only have a few hours in a day, and you need to keep your smartness intact. Everything takes time and energy. And of course, something from your pocket.  

There are a lot of paid tools out there that offer all of these bells and whistles in terms of helping you find content ideas, keywords, and trending topics. But the good news is that you don’t need to pay for any of them.

3. Buzzsumo

Buzzsumo is a tool that analyzes the top or trending topics related to a niche or business. 

Just type in your keywords or topic. And it will generate the most shared topic across social media platforms. 

It can give you great ideas when you want to create content for YouTube, blog, or podcast.  It shows the number of shares of a topic, as well as who are the influencers who shared that. 

It is great if you want to discover the most shareable or popular content for your blog or any platforms that you have. 

If you want to get a deep dive into search engine optimization for Google with your blog posts, then there are three tools that have you covered. 

4. Yoast

Yoast is an SEO plugin that goes onto your WordPress site or your blog site.  You have to install this to your WordPress then it helps you with your SEO as you work on your content. 

What’s great about Yoast is that it is user-friendly. You just key in the keyword or phrase that you are working on. And it will analyze your blog post then tell you what is missing. 

It also does not require technical knowledge about SEO as the software will guide you on what to do next.

It has a color to guide you where the issues are or where you need to improve. 

It is easy to set up Yoast into WordPress and enjoy its benefits. 

It allows you to customize what your preview looks like when it shows up on Google. 

When you write a blog post. And it starts to rank on Google search. Google chooses what the headline looks like and what that little excerpt of text is to preview your blog post. Here you can tell Google what that should be. And that should help you with your search rankings.

Just head over to neilpatel.com. And just type in a domain or a keyword. Next, you will have the results. 

It will give you suggestions on how to fix your SEO errors. And provide data on your competitors.  

Keywords Anywhere used to be on this list.  But now, they want money for everything that they do. So UberSuggest is now the new winner when it comes to a free SEO keyword research tool.

6. SEO Analyzer

SEO Analyzer will go through your entire site where Yoast SEO is only doing it on a per post method

This one will go through your entire site. And let you know where the red flags are that you need to fix to improve your Google rankings. 

The next two will be free tools that help you with content ideas for your YouTube videos. 

7. YouTube suggestions box

Yes, this is overly simplified. But YouTube itself can give you content ideas as you type in your keywords in their suggestion box. 

I could not elaborate enough. It’s always been there the entire time. Right before your eyes. 

8. TubeBuddy

TubeBuddy is the best place to find content ideas. And they still offer a free version. 

Aside from that, it gives ideas on keyword suggestions. It also shows you the videos that rank well on YouTube. 

You can get a lot of content inspiration at TubeBuddy. 

Product 

One of the advantages of digital marketing is you can do your business anywhere, anytime. 

You also have a physical store. It does not require you to build a brick and mortar store to expand and grow your business. 

You can sell ebooks, online classes, or have a client-based business. But what is important here is to connect with your customers most efficiently. 

Here, I will share with you two tools that you can use to do online classes and connect with your clients. 

9. Thinkific Free Plan

Thinkific is a software that allows you to create, market, and sell online courses. If you’re into digital marketing and you love to teach, then Thinkific is a great start for you. 

They offer a free plan that lets you do online courses for $0. But it is a great way to start running an online business. Then you can upgrade to their paid plan once your business grows.

And this is much better than posting your course for free on Udemy. I’ve made several reviews of Udemy. But at the end of the day, it comes down to control. Because you don’t have control when it comes to how you run your courses in Udemy. 

Teachable is also a great platform to do online classes. But they no longer offer a free plan. So Thinkific is the way to go. 

1o. Google Forms

Google Form is part of Google Suite. 

This free tool allows you to create personalized surveys and questions that your prospect or customer could answer. Their answers are collected and sent to a spreadsheet. The spreadsheet collates all the answers from the survey, then you can study and analyze their answers. 

We like using this for our clients, and sometimes during our sales process. 

If you have a client-based business, it is very convenient to set up Google forms so that it’s very easy for your clients to request services or ask questions.

This is also better than your clients to send you a bunch of emails. Because emails can get jumbled in your inbox. And you might miss answering one important message. 

It’s a very clean way to go into your daily business transactions. You can just check and see what the questions that your clients have. 

Now, the final category. 

Team 

This is all about project management to make sure that you and your business run smoothly. 

As your business grows, you still need to have control. And has to know everything that is going on in your business. 

We have a small team. But we work in different time zones, so we need to have tools that can work for us wherever and whatever time it is.

I have two main software programs here. 

11. Google G Suite

Google drive sheets and documents are the lifeblood of our agency. 

It is an incredible free tool that allows you to collaborate with pretty much anyone in the world. 

We’re across three or four different countries right now. And we can all in real-time edit the same Word document, Excel sheet, and slides. So I recommend using Google drive for all of your actual files. 

If you’re using the free version, all of the Google docs spreadsheets and Google slides you use, don’t count towards your limit. 

If you use what Google provides to you, you don’t have to worry about storage limits. 

Even though you only get 15GB for free, you’ll find that you’ll be able to create all of the documents and spreadsheets that you need. 

12. Asana

Asana is a project management tool. You can use it to organize your team. And track and manage their works. 

They still offer a free plan for up to 15 people.

This is the tool that we used for our agency.  But we recently upgraded to Basecamp. But that was because we had so many clients that we needed to move to a different solution. 

If you are just starting with your business. And you’re looking for a project manager for free that you can invite people to, you can use Asana. 

So that does it for all of the free tools. 

Conclusion 

There are different tools out in the market today. But you need to figure out which is the right one for you. 

You need help in running your business. And it is essential that you also consider the price tags of the tools that you use. Because it is not easy to transfer from one tool to the other.
