Mailerlite Landing Page Tutorial For List Growth (Free Landing Page Builder)
A landing page is a dedicated page in your site where a visitor “lands on” after clicking a promotion – an ad or organic content.
A landing page is unique because it is where you capture the contact information of your visitors for them to join your email list. Because of its special role in the sales funnel, the landing page has features that are not found on the homepage.
- It has a specific call to action. Yes, only one action.
A homepage can have a lot of links or actions that a visitor can take depending on the type of information that he needs.
- It is focused on one offer.
It does not have distractions so that it makes people see the value of the offer.
- It has a sign-up form.
This is where a visitor enters his name and email in exchange for a freebie.
- It has a lead magnet or freebie.
This can be a PDF, ebook, spreadsheet, or even video content that is valuable to the audience. The reason why he will opt-in to your email list.
- It does not have other external links (even your website URL)
The purpose is for the visitor to understand what your offer is all about.
A landing page is so important because it gives an impression of what your business or your brand is all about.
You must put careful attention to how you craft your landing page to persuade your ideal customers to be part of your email list.
Once they’re on your email list, they now become leads. And it will be easier for you to send those emails, newsletters, or promotions.
A landing page has five elements.
- Headline – The purpose of this is to immediately grab the attention of your ideal customer. This should be catchy but communicates what your offer is all about. And it should be congruent with what you talked about on the ad or content that your visitor clicked on.
- Call to action button – This is the action that you want your ideal customer to take. The usual call to action is to ask for their contact details in exchange for a PDF. Your CTA should also involve no risk on the part of your visitor, especially related to money.
- Bullet points – It is a simple description/s of what your lead magnet is all about. You just state what is inside the lead magnet that will help solve their pains. And keep this simple.
- Graphic – A tangible image of what your lead magnet is all about. Your ideal customers could have a better grasp of what your offer is all about once they see a picture of your offer.
- Proof –This is not required, especially if you’re a new entrepreneur. These are your credentials, testimonials, and good reviews. It can also be a logo of the brands who endorsed you that will help convince your ideal customers that you can be trusted.
But you can see in our tutorial that I only placed three elements on the landing page that I did – a headline, a graphic, and a CTA button.
Yes, it’s simple. But it delivers value. And most of all, it persuades my ideal customers to sign up for my email list.
Plus it is not complicated to do. I only built this landing page in less than 30 minutes using free software.
What are we waiting for? Let’s dive into our tutorial.
Tutorial
Now, we are ready with our tutorial on how to do email marketing using MailerLite. We will go through step-by-step on how to set it up.
The first step is to go to MailerLite.com. And set up your account.
You can create a free account for up to 1,000 subscribers and 12,000 emails. Once you have your free account, it might take a few days before it gets activated.
Once you have logged in, you will be directed to their dashboard.
Next, we will build our landing page.
Click on Site.
What is awesome about MailerLite is you don’t have to worry about how to create your landing pages. Or deal with other page builders.
You can grow your email list using MailerLite.
In this tutorial, we will build a landing page for an Analytics Checklist.
This is very simple. But what’s important is that it works.
And you can do this in 10 minutes.
Click Create a Landing page
Name your landing page. So, I will name this as an Analytics Audit Checklist. Because that is what we offer as a lead magnet.
Tip: Name your landing page just simple. One that you will remember in the future.
Next, Mailer Lite will ask you what group you want your new subscribers to be added to.
Typically, you have to create two groups for each subscriber.
- Group 1: Everyone who has ever opted into a landing page. This is your entire list.
- Group 2: Based on the lead magnet or landing page that they have specifically signed up into.
In this tutorial, we will click on One Aspire Entrepreneur. This is for everyone, Group 1.
Then, we will click on Add a New Group. This is for the people who opted in for this particular lead magnet or landing page.
Click on Create.
Now, we have two groups.
Then, we will continue with Automation.
Emails will automatically go out when they are added to our specific group. And not when they’re added to the group for everyone.
We will click on Save and continue.
Now, we will choose the template.
They do have quite a few options. And they look nice.
But we will start from scratch. Because we don’t need our template to win any design awards. So, we just keep it simple. And just do its purpose – a landing page.
So, I will select the first one. And we will start from scratch.
Tip: You can select any one of these. Because we will just remove everything. But make sure that you choose the one that doesn’t have top navigation.
There are two ways that we can remove all the elements in the template.
- Manually delete each one of the elements. Or
- Click on Actions, then select Remove content blocks.
Yes, we will have a blank slate. And start here.
Don’t worry, we will only add a few elements.
Now, we will start with a headline.
Just click the headline. And drag to the work area.
Next, we will do our sign up form.
Just click on Forms. This will be our sign up form with an image.
You can also add a text at the bottom of the page. This will be your legal disclaimer. It depends upon your niche. So, you probably want to add a legal disclaimer.
These are the only three elements that you need – a heading, form, and text.
Now, we will start with the headline. We will just keep this nice and simple.
Our headline is “The Ultimate Analytics Checklist”.
Simple as clicking the headline bar. And type in your headline.
If you want more information on how to do the actual copywriting for your landing page, I’ll link up in the description to a full-blown tutorial that goes through landing page copywriting.
Then, we will keep it Medium. And make sure that it is centered.
Also, you have an option to change colors, fonts, and size.
Just click on the A symbol. And feel free to change how your headline looks based on your preference.
Since Google Analytics is orange. So, we will change our font to orange. And the font, too.
And make sure that your headline is centered.
You can also change how your text looks; wide, medium, or narrow.
Tip: If you put spaces in random places, it will not look good on mobile.
I will just add a little space at the top. And I think this is good enough for our checklist.
Next, we will do our sign up form.
- We will add an image for our offer;
- A couple of bullet points; and
- Where they will enter their name and email.
So we’ll start with the image.
I have uploaded an image that we will use for this tutorial. I use Canva to make this cover.
I use Canva for most of our lead magnets. So this one is a cover on one of our PDF offers.
I just added one big picture of our lead magnet. And this picture cost one dollar from Canva, then I just added more information. You can do a lot in Canva.
Now, we have uploaded our image.
And we can click on the Edit image.
If you need to make small changes in your image, MailerLite’s editor has you covered.
I am good with the image. So, we will move to our landing page.
We will edit on our sign up form. Then add a few bullets.
We will have three to five bullet points.
One thing that I wish MailerLite has is a bullet point block feature. Because it doesn’t have one. But, I have here a landing page bullet point that you can use. This will allow you to use the check mark emoji for your bullet points.
<p><span style=”font-size: 24px;”>✔ Bullet 1</span></p>
<p><span style=”font-size: 24px;”>✔Bullet 2</span></p>
<p><span style=”font-size: 24px;”>✔ Bullet 3</span></p>
<p><span style=”font-size: 24px;”>✔ Bullet 4</span></p>
<p></p>
<p></p>
Copy the code.
Then, click on HTML. Delete the texts inside. And paste the code.
Now, we have four checkmark bullet points on our landing page.
To write your sentences, just highlight the bullets and numbers. Then, replace it with descriptions about your lead magnet.
Now, our bullet points are ready.
Next, we will deal with our call to action button.
The only other thing we need to do is change the button text and the button color. Because we have to make it match or stand out from everything else on the page.
We already have a red button that already stands out. We can just leave that way.
But we will edit the text to “Download”.
Then, we will click on Form. And I will add the Name box. So we will get their name and email.
Tip: You don’t have to ask for their name. But if you have their name, you have more flexibility in your email marketing.
If we go to Settings, we can play with how your sign up form looks.
One feature of MailerLite is it can change the form to checklist ratio.
Then, we can make the image bigger, the form bigger, or we can keep them equal.
I like the equal ratio. So we will leave it this way.
Another is we can switch the alignment. Also, squeeze things in, or even squeeze them in even more.
Tip: You don’t have to worry about mobile. It’s going to format on n mobile automatically for you.
We will just leave it on wide. I think it is the best.
You can also change the color of your call to action button.
And you can also change the hover color. So that when the cursor is near the button, it changes in color.
So, if you want to change the hover color to orange, you can do it.
Or to green, which means go, right?
You can also play with the font, size, and color.
You can also change the width. Here, I show you that you can change it to full width.
What I will change here is make it smaller. And place it at the center.
Then, make the text bigger. So the button is larger and noticeable.
Now, we have put together a landing page in less than 10 minutes.
Let’s click on Save.
Let’s check on the Preview mode.
Here is how it will look like on the Desktop.
And more importantly, what it will look like on mobile.
MailerLite does a very good job of formatting everything for mobile.
One advantage if your landing page is not too fancy, you are assured that it will fit on any screen size. This includes all mobile devices.
Now, we will exit our Preview mode. And go back to our landing page.
I hope you can see how easy and simple we have created our landing page.
Let’s click on Save and Publish.
Let us go through the advanced settings. Then, we will dive into our actual email sequence setup.
If you opt for the paid plan, then you can create and use your domain.
This is very important especially if you are into Google Analytics. Your $10 per month is very worth it.
So, I will change our domain. And name it Analytics checklist.
Now, we will go to Favicon.
The Favicon is the little green box.
You will change this to your logo.
I have saved our logo here. And the best size is 55×35.
Then, I will select our image.
Now, your actual company will show up instead of that of MailerLite.
It is an extra step that adds a professional look to your landing page.
You don’t want your landing page to get indexed.
If you do any kind of paid traffic, you need to have your Google Analytics, Facebook pixel, Google ads, and remarketing tags. Then you need to use Google Tag Manager to place all the tags and pixels into your landing page. You can access the tutorial here.
So we are done with the two settings that you need to give attention to.
Click on Save and continue.
Now, our page is live.
Let’s check out the live preview.
This is what our page looks like because we updated the favicon.
People can already enter their name and email. And download the analytics checklist. Well, almost there.
We need to make sure that emails will be sent out when a prospect fills out this form.
Let’s go back to our dashboard. And we will click on Automation.
It’s time to set up the email sequence that goes out once they enter their name and email.
Even if you only have one email going out, that’s better than nothing.
Click on Create Workflow.
We will name this workflow after our offer or landing page. Because it’s simpler to track if they have the same names. So we will know what’s going on inside our account.
Then, we will set up our workflow trigger.
This is where it can get a little tricky. We can either choose “When someone joins a group” or “When someone enters their name and email” on a specific landing page.
But I like it when someone joins a group. Because you might have multiple landing pages for the same lead magnet.
So you will have multiple landing pages but only one email sequence. Because your offer is the same.
So let’s use ‘Join as a subscriber group.’ Then select the group that we created.
Just skip the “Repeat workflow for subscribers who rejoined the same group”. I don’t want to send the same sequence again when someone subscribes again.
Click on Save. Then, we will set up our first trigger.
Our first trigger is an email. This is where you put the link for your freebie.
Then, you give your email a subject.
You can also put emoji or any things that you collected.
If you choose to let them put their name on the signup form, then you can personalize your email.
“Hey, exclusively for [name]…” or “Hey, [name], here’s your checklist”.
When you click on the Design email, you will be able to write the text or the body of your email.
I like to keep things simple. And I just use the rich text editor when it comes to email deliverability.
Typically, service providers look at emails that have a lot of pictures. But it would be better if you start with a normal text email.
Writing an email takes some time. Let’s say that we’re done with our first email.
So, click on Done editing. And it will take us back to our workflow.
Now, we have email number one.
Next, we will select a day before we send our second email. One day’s delay will be okay.
Then click ON again. Next, we will do Email No. 2.
Then provide another one day delay again.
We will send between five to seven emails in this sequence.
So just repeat the process. A delay, then an email. Until you are done with the number of sequences that you plan to do.
After five to seven emails, we are hopeful that you have gotten your paid offer.
Because you have added your subscriber to Group 1 (Everyone), he can also get a regular newsletter from you. It can be weekly or monthly.
Now, we will exit our automation. And go back to our landing page.
I should note that you have to make sure that your landing page is active.
Just click on Edit.
Then swipe left to activate once you’re on the next page.
Now, your landing page is active. It can now start with its automation.
Now, we have our landing page plus its automation.
But I will still give you a bonus tutorial. And that is your success page.
Tip: We glossed over this. But we do want to take advantage of the attention got from someone who just entered our email list.
For our success page, just click on Edit.
.
Click on the Success Page.
Click on Actions. Then click Remove content blocks.
Yes, remove everything again.
Then, let’s do your headline.
So you can put an image here.
If you want to make a paid offer or affiliate offer, then you may add a video.
If you want someone to take action, then use the button element to have them click through to another page.
In this tutorial, I don’t have another offer to make.
I will just say, “Thank you! It’s on the way!”
Then, let’s go to Settings.
I will just change our font color to orange. Then it’s medium. And make sure that it is centered, too. Again and make sure that it’s medium and make sure that it’s centered too.
For our image, I will just select the same image that I had on the landing page. This is to let them know that their PDF is on the way.
But the image on our success page is way too big.
So let’s go to Settings. Make it medium. And bring it down.
This way, it won’t be too large.
Tip: You can add a small text that lets them know the actual email address that they should look for. Because sometimes our messages might go into folders or spam that we don’t want them to.
We want to make it very easy for people to find us.
So, you can add your domain on this page.
If you want to add social links or maybe you have a piece of content you want them to engage with, you can also drop it here as well.
I will just delete the video and button element. Because we don’t have a sales message here.
This is a bonus thing you can do. You don’t have to worry about doing another offer.
Now, you can start filling your email list.
Conclusion
A good landing page does not have to be fancy or win any design award to persuade someone to subscribe to your email list.
It should be focused and talk to the customer in a personal way – that you can be helpful even if he has not subscribed yet.
The purpose is to grow your email list so that you can generate more leads. And eventually earn more sales.
Plus, you can create a winning landing page with the use of free software called MailerLite.
